I wrote this song after my Afi (Icelandic Grandpa) passed away. He suffered from strokes. Sometimes he wouldn't remember who you were and other times he was sharp as a whistle.
My earliest memories of fishing were with my Afi on the Red River. We caught a Goldeye and he prepared when we got home late one night. I'll never forget the taste.
In his last days, he would have very vivid dreams. He would wake up confused as to why he was in a hospital bed. He would say things like "I was just there, with my Afi and Amma, fishing off the shores in Hecla... I was there". This stuck with me. I imagined his mind was deteriorating, removing all the bad thoughts and replacing them with comfortable memories of childhood. I would like to think that's where we all go, just back to the days fishing with your grandparents.
